Miss Philippines, Megan Young, was crowned Miss World 2013 on the Indonesia Island of Bali on Saturday night.
The 23-year-old US born and digital film student beat 126 other contestants after she pledged to be the ‘best Miss World ever’. Miss France, Marine Lorphelin (20), was placed second and 22-year-old Miss Ghana, Carranzar Naa Okailey Shooter, came in third.
Although Young was born in the US, she moved to the Philippines at the early age of 10. She has been living there ever since, working as an actress and television host.
The pageant was initially set to take place in the Indonesian capital Jakarta, but was moved to the resort Island of Bali due to protests from hard line muslim groups. Over the past month the Islamic Defenders Front took over the streets in protest of Indonesia hosting the pageant, which happens to be the world’s most populous muslim country. They called the pageant “pornography”, saying it was insulting to have women wearing bikinis. As a result, the pageant was moved to Nusa Dua in southern Bali, a predominantly Hindu resort island.
It was announced in June by event organisers that the contestants would have to avoid wearing bikinis this year. One type of swimwear was suggested to avoid causing offence.
Security for the event was therefore tightened in fear of attacks or violence, but police said there were no demonstrations or protests on the night.
