CAF Champions League semi-finals will come to an end this coming weekend, with
Orlando Pirates going head-to-head with Tunisia’s Esperance and Al Ahly of Egypt face
off with Coton Sport from Cameroon.
The CAF championship is the biggest club tournament in Africa, where Africa’s best
teams take each other on. The winner is crowned the best on the African continent and
will walk away with R15 000 000.
This is why a lot is expected from Orlando Pirates as they are representing the whole of
Southern Africa. The last time a team from the South won this tournament was in 1995
and Pirates were the victors. They are looking to bring back those glory days and try to
emulate the 1995 squad that walked away with gold. This is why the match against
Esperance is so important. Pirates have to win in Tunisia no matter what.
But they cannot ignore the fact that Esperance has been the best team of the
tournament so far. It’s going to be an uphill battle for the Buccaneers to go to Tunisia
and come back with a win. Especially since Esperance have only lost once in the entire
competition this season and they have been in the finals four consecutive times,
winning it in 2011. It will be the battle of former champions this Saturday. Who will come
out on top? We will have to wait and see.

Whoever comes out on top has to know that the champions league is not contested only
by Pirates and Esperance, there is Al Ahly who have been dominant in this competition
and are set to win their eighth title of the CAF Champions League.
In this decade alone, they have been champions five times in 2001,2005,2006,2008 and
2012. Al Ahly could go to Sunday’s match against Coton Sport with a crucial away goal
that could secure their place in the finals come November.
Even if Pirates win this weekend they still have to deal with the might of Egypt’s Al Ahly
who are looking to win this tournament again this year.
There is hope, as the Buccaneers are playing good football. They just need to score
goals and they could be unstoppable.
The fans can expect spectacular games this weekend, with all teams set to come out
blazing in hope of securing their spot in the finals, ultimately lifting that coveted trophy
and being crowned champions of Africa.
